BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Marshall women's basketball team dropped a road contest at the UAB Blazers, 77-65, Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena. Sophomore Savannah Wheeler led the Herd with 31 points and eight rebounds.
The Thundering Herd is now 11-7 overall and 6-3 in Conference USA. The Blazers improve to 12-7 overall and 5-2 in league action.
"Obviously we had a tough weekend," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "Credit to UAB. They got the ball where they needed it to go and hit shots when they needed to hit them. We couldn't get a stop when we needed one. They have good post players, and they have guards that can make shots. Obviously, two disappointing games."
With her 31 points, Wheeler jumped into 17th place all-time in career points at Marshall. She moved ahead of Saundra Fullen (1978-80) who scored 1,082 in her career, and Talequia Hamilton (2015-18) who put up 1,091 in her time with the Green & White. Wheeler has scored 30 or more points in four games this season and five times in her career. It was also her 21st-straight game in double-digits and the 57th time of her career. Wheeler shot 12-of-25 from the floor and 3-of-6 from three. Her 25 attempts are a career-high. Wheeler's eight boards were one off her season-high of nine against Southern Miss (Jan. 1), as she has now grabbed at least four rebounds in 10-straight contests.
Freshman CC Mays scored 13 points and had four rebounds. It was her fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season and her first since scoring 15 against Morehead State back on Nov. 19. Mays has also pulled down at least three boards in every game this season. She added two steals as well.
Senior Aaliyah Dunham scored 13 while hitting 4-of-8 from three-point range. Her four made three-pointers ties her career-best and is a season-high. Dunham tallied three assists, and has 445 total in her collegiate career, and added one steal.
Graduate student Kennedi Colclough scored five points. Freshman Samantha LaFon had two points and sophomore Alexis Johnson had one point and two boards.
Junior Lorelei Roper pulled in five boards and tied her career-high with four blocks. Roper now has 59 rejections in her career and needs three more blocks to crack the top 15 in program history. Fellow junior Kia Sivils had two rebounds and one steal. Freshman Aarionna Redman finished with one board. Redshirt freshman Christiana McLean played three minutes off the bench in the first half.
Marshall jumped out front in the first quarter scoring the first six points. The Herd put up its biggest lead of nine, 19-10, after LaFon went 2-for-2 at the line. Mays hit a three-pointer from the wing with three seconds left in the quarter with the period ending with Marshall up 25-16. Mays finished the first with 11 points. Wheeler had seven and Colclough scored three. The Herd defense forced four turnovers.
The Blazers came back in the second quarter, outscoring Marshall 19-11, and bringing the score back within one at 36-35. The score was tied twice, and the Blazers took the lead briefly with 1:08 to go. Wheeler then hit a three from the corner to give the lead back to Marshall in the closing moments. Wheeler scored all 11 of the Herd's points in the second.
