HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Visiting Old Dominion outrebounded Marshall by 10 en route to a 62-47 win over the Thundering Herd Thursday evening in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Monarchs improved to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in Conference USA. The Thundering Herd dropped to 11-8 and 6-4 in the league.
ODU was led by Brianna Jackson's 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Aziah Hudson and Amari Young posted 12 and 10 points, respectively. Young also added three steals.
Seven of Jackson's rebounds came on the offensive end.
Marshall's Savannah Wheeler fought through early foul trouble to match Jackson with 15 points of her own. CC Mays was the Herd's leading rebounder with a season-high 11, two off her career high. Aaliyah Dunham chipped in a game-high four assists and four steals.
The contest was a seesaw affair in the first quarter, before Hudson's two free throws with 10 seconds left gave the visitors a 13-11 lead.
The Thundering Herd couldn't find the range, offensively, in the second quarter and fell behind by an 11-point margin (30-19) at halftime.
The ODU advantage grew to as many as 17 (37-20) on a Young layup with 5:45 left in the third period.
The Herd chipped away in the fourth quarter and closed to within nine (52-43) on a Wheeler triple at the 7:30 mark but was held without a field goal the rest of the way.
ODU committed four more turnovers than Marshall (16-12), but held a 19-11 edge on points off those miscues.
The visitors also led in points in the paint (30-18), second chance points (16-9) and bench points (17-8).
Marshall held ODU leading scorer Iggy Allen (14.0 ppg) to single-digits (eight points) for just the fifth time all season and limited the Monarchs to a 3-for-16 clip (18.8 percent) from the beyond the arc.
However, Marshall couldn't capitalize and wound up shooting 27.4 percent (17-for-62) for the game.
"We have to get back to playing better," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "I don't think there is any question about that. We need to understand that we don't have a big margin for error. I think we are operating at a percentage of correct versus incorrect that is way too low to win a game like tonight.
"It needs to be a frustrated locker room that practices well tomorrow heading into Charlotte. Our fight will have to be better versus Charlotte. We will have to hit more shots, play better defense, get more rebounds. It all has to be better on Saturday."
The Thundering Herd will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. when the aforementioned 49ers (10-7, 6-1) visit the Henderson Center. Head coach Cara Consuegra's squad remains atop the C-USA's East Division following a 79-74 overtime win at WKU on Thursday.
