League-Leading 49ers Hit Huntington for Saturday Afternoon Contest

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Charlotte women's basketball team will face the Marshall women on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET inside the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd enters the game with an 11-8 overall record and is 6-4 in Conference USA play. The 49ers come in at 10-7 and atop the C-USA East Division with a league-best 6-1 mark.

The first 200 fans will receive a Marshall-themed water bottle. Posters will also be available on the concourse of the Henderson Center.

Marshall is coming off a 62-47 loss to Old Dominion on Thursday.
ODU was led by Brianna Jackson's 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Aziah Hudson and Amari Young posted 12 and 10 points, respectively. Young also added three steals.

Seven of Jackson's rebounds came on the offensive end.

Marshall's Savannah Wheeler fought through early foul trouble to match Jackson with 15 points of her own. CC Mays was the Herd's leading rebounder with a season-high 11, two off her career high. Aaliyah Dunham chipped in a game-high four assists and four steals.

The contest was a seesaw affair in the first quarter, before Hudson's two free throws with 10 seconds left gave the visitors a 13-11 lead.

The Thundering Herd couldn't find the range, offensively, in the second quarter and fell behind by an 11-point margin (30-19) at halftime.

The ODU advantage grew to as many as 17 (37-20) on a Young layup with 5:45 left in the third period.

The Herd chipped away in the fourth quarter and closed to within nine (52-43) on a Wheeler triple at the 7:30 mark but was held without a field goal the rest of the way.

ODU committed four more turnovers than Marshall (16-12), but held a 19-11 edge on points off those miscues.

The visitors also led in points in the paint (30-18), second chance points (16-9) and bench points (17-8).

Marshall held ODU leading scorer Iggy Allen (14.0 ppg) to single-digits (eight points) for just the fifth time all season and limited the Monarchs to a 3-for-16 clip (18.8 percent) from the beyond the arc.

However, Marshall couldn't capitalize and wound up shooting 27.4 percent (17-for-62) for the game.

Scouting the 49ers
After a rough stretch of non-conference games, the 49ers have been on a roll in league play and have come through in some tough contests.

Charlotte had its first three C-USA games postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the program. Once the 49ers got back on the court, the squad has been tough to defeat. Charlotte rolled out five consecutive wins, including an 88-84 win over Rice that lasted four overtime periods. The 49ers suffered its first league loss on Saturday against Old Dominion, 54-45. Charlotte bounced right back with a 79-74 overtime win at WKU on Thursday.

Against the Hilltoppers, the 49ers used clutch free throw shooting at the end of regulation to come back and tie the game at 63. Charlotte then went on a 10-0 run to begin the overtime period and led 73-63. WKU didn't go away, fighting back and getting within one at 75-74. Octavia Jett-Wilson and Mikayla Boykin hit two free throws each to close the game. All five starters for Charlotte scored in double figures. KeKe McKinney had a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards.

Jett-Wilson led the team with 19 points and leads the 49ers in scoring for the year with 18.8 per game, good for third in C-USA. Boykin is also averaging double-digits with 12.6 points per game. McKinney, a graduate transfer from Kentucky, is having a great season in Charlotte. She leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game as well as leading the league in blocks (37) and blocks per game (2.18). McKinney has five double-doubles this season and was close to a triple-double against Rice with 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks.

Jada McMillian is tops in the league in total assists (84) and assists per game (4.94). McMillian leads Charlotte in minutes per game with 35.46, good for third in the league.

Head coach Cara Consuegra is in her 11th season leading the 49ers and has 185 wins.
