HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 4 Marshall University men's soccer team (7-2-2, 2-1-2 Sun Belt) dropped its contest, 2-1, on Saturday night to the Old Dominion Monarchs (5-4-2, 2-1-1 Sun Belt) at Hoops Family Field.
The Herd outshot the Monarchs 25-8 and had 19 corner kicks to the visitor's three.
"We've come up against that before (a hot goalkeeper)," MU men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said after the match. "We had a lot of chances, a lot of corners. That's soccer sometimes. Sometimes it goes our way, sometimes it doesn't."
Graduate student goalkeeper Oliver Semmle made a pair of saves on back-to-back shots in the 15th minute, but conceded a corner on the second attempt. Off the corner, ODU's Louis Beckett found Michael Eberle, who headed home the pass to put the Monarchs up 1-0.
ODU goalkeeper Michael Statham made four saves in the first 45 minutes of action as MU trailed 1-0 at the halftime.
In the second half, the Monarchs had their second corner of the game in the 63rd minute. Beckett sent it as Samuel Mar Kristinsson headed it into the goal to have MU down 2-0.
Then in the 74th minute, senior Gabriel Alves had the ball and fired a shot from about 30 yards out. The ball ricocheted off the crossbar and into the net as the defender's first goal of the season pulled the Herd within one, 2-1.
Semmle came up with a big save in the 79th minute, but Marshall could not find a way to tie the match as it fell to ODU.
