Souza tallies sixth goal of the season
Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The No. 6 Marshall University men's soccer team (9-2-3, 3-1-3 Sun Belt) shutout the Wright State Raiders (4-6-4, 4-1-2 Horizon) 1-0 on Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio.
"Tonight was a match we should've put away sooner," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said. "Credit to our guys, I think we created 2.0 xG in the first five minutes, but there is the challenge for us, to be more ruthless and more dangerous in those situations. Collectively I thought we defended quite well, and as a team we circulated the ball well. We've played quite a few low block, counter attacking teams this season, and I thought our guys dealt with them well when they got physical and chippy.."
Marshall came out gunning with freshman Matthew Bell, sophomore Mohammed Seidu and senior Vinicius Fernandes each firing a shot on goal in the first seven minutes of the contest. However, all three attempts were saved by Wright State goalkeeper Guilherme Pipolo.
Graduate student goalkeeper Oliver Semmle came up with a big save on a shot by Jacob Adams to keep WSU off the board in the 13th minute.
In the 16th minute, junior Adam Aoumaich sent a pass to Bell, who sent in a cross and found a sliding Joao Souza who put home a goal to put Marshall on top 1-0 with his sixth goal of the season.
Redshirt senior Milo Yosef had a shot on target in the 22nd minute, but the attempt was saved as the Herd entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Wright State had the lone shot on goal in the second half, but Semmle stopped the Reece Allbaugh attempt in the 55th minute to record his fourth shutout of the season.
