Semmle records fifth shutout of the season
Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 5 Marshall University men's soccer team (10-2-3, 4-1-3 Sun Belt) recorded its second straight shutout with a 2-0 win over the James Madison Dukes (6-7-4, 2-3-3 Sun Belt) to close out the regular season. With the victory, the Herd clinched the second seed in the 2022 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
The shutout was graduate student goalkeeper Oliver Semmle's fifth shutout of the season, tied atop the Sun Belt.
"That was great effort," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said about his team after the match. "It was a difficult opponent. We both had guys out. We had a suspension and a couple of illnesses. They were about the same. It was a scrappy performance that went end-to-end. It must have been entertaining."
The two teams took a little time to get going offensively in the contest, but Semmle made the first save of the contest in the 13th minute on an attempt by Ethan Taylor. Junior Adam Aoumaich fired a shot on goal a couple minutes later that was saved by JMU goalkeeper Sebastian Colon.
Semmle saved another Taylor attempt at the 18:47 mark to keep the match scoreless.
Then in the 44th minute, Aoumaich sent an over-the-top through ball to freshman Ryan Holmes. Holmes then sent in a cross to freshman Matthew Bell, who guided home his team-leading ninth goal of the season to make it 1-0 Herd as the team's entered halftime.
The Dukes came out of the break hot as Taylor recorded his third shot on goal, but the MU defense helped Semmle by clearing the ball of the line to keep the visitors off the board in the 46th minute.
Marshall used the momentum in the 53rd minute as senior Joao Souza tallied his seventh goal off the season on assists by Aoumaich and Bell to double the team's lead, 2-0. The assist by Aoumaich marked his team-leading ninth of the season, second most in the conference.
Semmle made another huge save in the 77th minute as the Herd defense helped keep the ball out of the team's 18-yard box for the majority of the last 13 minutes to preserve the shutout.
