Players to join Thundering Herd in Fall of 2023

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University softball head coach Megan Smith Lyon announced seven additions to the softball family Friday.

Sydney Bright

Sydney Bright is a right-handed utility player at catcher and third base. Bright is a two-time State Champion for Herbert Hoover High School from Elkview, West Virginia. As a junior in 2022, she won First Team All-State in addition to being First Team All-Kanawha Valley. On choosing to play at Marshall, Bright said, "Marshall plays for something bigger than yourself and we always play for the 75."

Emily Cole

Emily Cole is a right-handed pitcher from Vanceburg, Kentucky. Cole earned 2022 State Class 2A Player of the Year honors, as well as First Team All-State honors as a junior. Her junior year consisted of 431 strikeouts, 30 wins, and an ERA of 0.83. Cole has been a great hitter as well, hitting for a batting average of .531, with seven home runs and 41 RBI's. She earned All-Area Region Pitcher of the Year in 2021 and 2022 for Lewis County High School. Cole chose Marshall because of, "The variety of medical related majors offered by Marshall and for their great softball program."

Ramey George

Ramey George is a right-handed utility player and catcher from Huntington, attending St. Joseph Central Catholic. On her travel team, George was voted team captain and has led the team in home runs the past three seasons. She won Tournament MVP at the Greensboro Open Tournament in 2022.  Ramey chose Marshall because of, "The community support behind the school and the program. I also love the coaches and how the team feels like a family. Marshall truly is a special place due to their story."

Chandler Hoskins

Chandler Hoskins is a right handed utility infielder from Miamisburg, Ohio. Hoskins earned First Team All-GWOC for Miamisburg High School and has also previously been named Player of the Week for the Dayton Daily News.  Chandler chose Marshall because, "The campus is beautiful and peaceful. They had the major I wanted and they have a great medical program.  I chose Marshall mostly because of the family atmosphere, there is nothing like it. The family at Marshall is what I wanted in a college and I couldn't ask for better coaches and teammates to be around for the next chapter of my life. They were so welcoming when I first came in and it made it feel like home after the first visits."

Destiny Washington

Destiny Washington is a right-handed outfielder from Lauderhill, Florida. She has a high school career batting average of .550, with 29 extra base hits, seven home runs, 88 total hits, 38 RBI's, and 72 stolen bases. Destiny holds a 99% fielding percentage from her freshman to junior year. Destiny chose Marshall because, "You play for something bigger than yourself and not a lot of schools can say that." Destiny's sister Taylor is a student manager for the Marshall softball program, and will be joined by her sister Kaleea at Marshall.

Kaleea Washington

Kaleea Washington is a right-handed pitcher from Lauderhill, Florida. Washington has a high school record of 22-12 with a 1.52 ERA with 66 strikeouts. Kaleea is a strong hitter as well, with a .371 batting average, with 13 extra base hits and two home runs. Kaleea joined Marshall, "To be a part of something bigger than myself." Kaleea's sister Taylor is a student manager for the Marshall softball program, and will be joined by her sister Destiny at Marshall.

Bailee Walters

Bailee Walters is a left handed outfielder and first baseman from Fairborn, Ohio. As a junior, Walters hit .541, with six home runs, 12 doubles (setting a new school record in a season), and 36 RBI's for a slugging percentage of .973. She earned 1st Team All-Conference in 2022, after earning All-Conference Honorable Mention the year before after hitting .493. Bailee chose Marshall because, "I chose Marshall not only because of the atmosphere, and the softball coaches, but to play for something bigger than myself. I want to honor the 75 every time I put on my uniform. Marshall also has a great business program, it is a perfect distance from my home, they have an amazing softball organization, and the coaches are awesome! During my visits, I felt at home and very welcomed by everyone."
