HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team rode a hot first quarter to defeat West Virginia Wesleyan, 72-39, at the Cam Henderson Center Tuesday evening. The Herd evens its record at 1-1 on the young season.
Redshirt-freshman guard Terah Harness connected on three shots from beyond the arc as Marshall made eight triples in the opening quarter. The Herd women led the visiting Bobcats, 30-9 after one quarter. Junior transfer Abby Beeman scored seven of her team-high 15 in the opening frame.
The visitors from Buckhannon settled into the game in the second, as Marshall increased their lead by just four in the second, and the two sides played even at 15-15 in the third. Women's basketball head coach Tony Kemper took positives from the team's win, while acknowledging the need to stay locked in for four quarters.
"There's good in there [In the team's win], and I think it's also a group that understands we have a long way to go to hit where we are actually capable of playing," Kemper said. "But you can also see that in terms of talent and depth, it's a pretty good team, so we have to continue to grow, figure out who needs to be out there when we need stops, and where the ball needs to go. It is a team with some depth, and it is good to get off to a good start at home."
Entering the final frame leading 59-34, the Herd kept Wesleyan without a field goal for the final 9:30 of the game. Senior Kia Sivils led the team defensively with six steals while sophomore Ashley Tudor led Marshall with six rebounds.
Sophomore Aarionna Redman made her season debut for Marshall, while freshmen Peyton Ilderton and Olivia Ziolkowski made their collegiate debuts Tuesday night. Ilderton scored five points, while Ziolkowski grabbed a rebound in the win.
