Taylor tallied game-high 24 points
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team took down the University of Pikeville Bears 83-69 on Wednesday night at the Cam Henderson Center in the team's final exhibition prior to the 2022-23 regular season.
"Overall, I thought up until the seven-minute mark we had about a 24-point lead. If I had kept them (our starters in) we probably could have gotten to 30, but they (UPIKE) shoot the ball well," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said.
Redshirt senior Andrew Taylor shot 50 percent from the field (10-for-20) for a game-high 24 points to go with six assists.
Fifth-year senior Taevion Kinsey also reached double-digit points with 15 on a 7-for-12 shooting night. The Columbus, Ohio, native also grabbed eight rebounds in the contest.
Freshman Micah Handlogten brought down a game-high nine board, scored six points and rejected three shots in the victory.
The Herd dominated the Bears in the first half. MU outscored the visitors 47-27 during the first 20 minutes of play as it made 58.8 percent of its shots (20-of-34). It also went 6-for-15 (40 percent) from behind-the-arc in the opening half.
The Green and White made 34 of its 69 shots from field for a 49.3 shooting percentage.
Marshall won the battle in the paint 42-26 and had 22 second-chance points off 17 UPIKE turnovers.
