Box Score

FOLEY, Ala. – A pair of goals past the century mark of action sent the three-time defending champions, South Alabama to a 3-1 victory over the Marshall women's soccer team Wednesday afternoon at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.

"The message we had today was it's all about us and how we can play to our potential and hands down we did that today," Coach Michael Swan said. "I'm super proud of our senior players and how they've stuck with it. When you reflect on the season, the growth they've shown excites you about future seasons."

The 10 seed, Marshall played a strong and confident opening half. Following an early chance from freshman Makai Laguines, it was senior Kat Gonzalez from long-range once again in the 16th minute who opened the scoring. Gonzalez's curling shot into the bottom right corner put Marshall in front of South Alabama.

The three-time defending champions turned up the pressure in the second half, forcing two early saves from freshman goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth. The Marshall resistance was broken in the 78th minute on a header in the box to even the score at 1-1.

The Herd, who had 10 total shots in the match, had several chances in regulation but were unable to find a winner.

Following a quiet first half of overtime, South Alabama scored goals in the 104th and 106th to come away with a 3-1 overtime victory. The Jaguars now head to the Sun Belt Tournament semifinals to face the six seed ODU Monarchs. Old Dominion upset third seeded Arkansas State.

The Marshall women's soccer team finishes their first season in the Sun Belt with a 4-9-5 record (2-5-3 SBC). The Herd showed progress in 2021, finishing with their most points in conference since 2018.

"We are so proud of what we achieved this season," Swan added. "We are such a young program but as a lot of people have seen in the last month or so is the talent and determined effort we have within our locker room. I'm proud to say everyone played their part this week, especially today. Thank you to all our supporters, families, administrators and all who supported us this season. Go Herd!"
