HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to defeat St. Bonaventure Sunday from the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd had to respond after a difficult first half in which it shot 32 percent from the field.
Marshall turned to veteran Kia Sivils, with her team-leading five offensive rebounds in the win.
"I think we responded well," said Sivils in reference to an eight-point halftime deficit. "I feel like in the first half, sometimes we just weren't hitting our shots, but we didn't let that discourage us. I feel like we kept our composure well and did not get discouraged."
The zone defense from St. Bonaventure led to just eight points in the paint for Marshall in the first half. MU trailed 29-22 at the half. A pair of first half triples from Mahogany Matthews kept the Herd within striking distance.
The Bonnies extended their lead to 13 on consecutive three-pointers to open the second half. Unwaivered, Marshall began its rally with scores from Abby Beeman and Roshala Scott to cut into the deficit.
Despite Beeman being held to four points in the first half, and Scott being held scoreless, the duo finished with 13 and 14 points respectively to pace Marshall.
A pair of technical free throws from Terah Harness brought Marshall all the way back in front, before St. Bonaventure responded to take a one point lead heading into the fourth.
Roshala scored the first seven points for Marshall in the fourth, but still the Herd trailed 53-50 with just over four minutes remaining. Out of a timeout, Beeman's clutch triple tied the game, before Sivils's putback layup finally got Marshall over the hump.
The Herd led for just 6:08 in the contest. But the 11-0 run to finish the game gave Marshall the key 61-53 victory.
Marshall head coach Tony Kemper's side now sits at 6-4, Kemper acknowledged the team's fight, while recognizing the importance of winning even when not at your best.
"It's always important in basketball to be able to win ugly," Kemper said. There's just too many games, you don't always have everything clicking, everyone doesn't always feel good. I'm proud of them for finding a way to win that game. It was very difficult to win, it took every minute that we had, the score is not indicative of how close that game was. It is good to win when things aren't perfect."
