MOBILE, Ala. – The Sun Belt journey could not have started in a more dramatic way for the Marshall's women's basketball team on Thursday evening.
Led by Roshala Scott's game-winner with 2.6 seconds remaining in overtime, the Thundering Herd women defeated South Alabama, 63-61, to open its conference season.
The win improves the Herd to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference play.
"Great to find a way to win that game," Coach Kemper said. "We definitely played well at times, they played well at times. I thought we centered ourselves well in overtime [Following South Alabama's game-tying 3-pointer in regulation], Roshala hit a huge shot there to give us the lead, and you have to find one stop in a game like that, and we did."
The game saw a pair of ebbs and flows, with Marshall trailing by three after the first, only to double up the Jaguars in the second quarter. Senior Kendall Miller made a pair of 3-pointers, including a shot at the buzzer to give the Herd the 32-26 halftime lead.
A 10-0 run from the hosts opened the second half before Mahogany Matthews ended the run. The Herd's top-35 scoring defense then held USA to two points over the final five minutes of the third. Abby Beeman scored four of her team-high 20 points to trim the deficit to one heading into the fourth. Beeman finished with her first double-double of the season with 12 rebounds.
Beeman's jumper in the fourth gave the Herd a 56-49 lead with just under three minutes remaining in regulation, but the Jaguars answered with a 7-0 run including the aforementioned tying 3-pointer with seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Beeman hit a 3-pointer and Roshala Scott hit a pair of free throws to give the Herd the 61-58 lead. Once more, South Alabama answered with a game-tying triple, but Scott finished the game off with her 15-foot jumper from the corner.
