HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall shot 65 percent from the floor in the first quarter and never looked back in a 72-47 win over Wright State in front of 747 fans at Cam Henderson Center on Friday evening.
Mahogany Matthews scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds – five on the offensive end – while Abby Beeman also hit four of five 3-point attempts and finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in the win for Marshall (5-3).
Roshala Scott also grabbed all 11 of her rebounds on the defensive end to lead the Thundering Herd to a 48-28 advantage on the glass in the win.
"We did a nice job on the glass and that was important," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "That was important. I knew that needed to be a thing."
Marshall took control from the start, scoring the game's first 14 points and hitting 11 of 17 shots from the floor in the first quarter to build a double-digit advantage. Of Marshall's six misses in the opening period, Matthews grabbed three for putback layups that built an insurmountable lead.
The Thundering Herd led 37-25 at halftime, but Wright State (1-7) cut that deficit to 44-35 following a Makiya Miller 3-pointer with 6:55 left in the third. However, the Thundering Herd scored the game's next 12 points with six different players scoring during the run.
It was one of several sizable runs Marshall was able to go on, thanks to a defense that forced the Raiders into a 32 percent shooting performance.
"You can see that they are starting to get comfortable with 'This is how we guard this,'" Kemper said. "I think it was pretty good live."
In addition to the defensive strength, Marshall finished the game with just nine turnovers as a team and a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.
