MIAMI, Fla. – The Marshall women's basketball team fought but ultimately fell to the FIU Panthers, 70-66, Thursday night at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.

The Thundering Herd falls to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in Conference USA. The Panthers improve to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in league play.

"We started slow and (FIU) started really well," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "Ariel Colon was fantastic. She started the game really well and put us in a hole, that I thought we battled out of. They had a ton of second chance points. I thought they got a lot, especially in the first half, off our not-so-great ball-handling which led to fast-break, easy shots for them. Maybe three or four that were layups.

"I did think that we centered ourselves and battled back. Took the lead a couple times. I thought we made some big shots late. We didn't piece together enough stops on the other end to get it done. 27-7 on free throws, that probably makes a difference."

Sophomore Savannah Wheeler put up 28 points in the loss. Wheeler now has 1,149 career points and moves into 13th all-time, passing Mary Lopez (1975-79). Senior Aaliyah Dunham scored a season-high 18 points and was 4-of-8 from three. Her four made three-pointers tied her career-high. Dunham added three assists.

Freshman CC Mays had 11 points and set a career-high with three three-pointers. Mays tied for the team lead with four boards and added two steals. Senior Brianah Ferby had seven points and four rebounds. Sophomore Alexis Johnson had two points and three boards.

Junior Lorelei Roper and Kia Sivils had four rebounds each and freshman Aarionna Redman had three boards. Sivils led the Herd with three steals.

FIU quickly jumped out front in the first quarter, eventually getting to a double-digit lead, including its largest lead of the game, 13, at 22-9 with under a minute left in the first. Dunham hit a three with 32 seconds left in the period to bring the deficit to 10.

The Herd started to fight back in the second right from the start as Mays drained a three on Marshall's first possession of the quarter. Dunham added another three off a turnover that brought the deficit to four, 22-18, at the 8:29 mark. A three from Wheeler with 6:30 on the clock brought the Herd to within one, 26-25. Wheeler then gave Marshall a brief lead, 27-26, after grabbing a steal and then hitting a layup. FIU got back out in front before the Herd tied the game at 30-30 with 3:54 to go before the half. The Panthers retook the lead and stayed in front through the rest of the quarter, taking a 39-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. Wheeler scored 12 points in the second quarter and had 17 at the break.

In the third, Marshall pulled within one again at 41-40 after another three from Mays at the 7:36 mark. The Herd managed to keep the game close, then tied it up at 50-50 with three minutes left in the period, and then took another one-point lead, 52-51, less than one minute later on a layup from Dunham. Marshall had another one-point advantage, 54-53, with less than a minute to go in the third. FIU scored the final five points of the quarter to take a four-point lead into the fourth quarter. Dunham led the Herd with eight points in the third. Ferby added five points.

Both teams struggled shooting in the fourth quarter as FIU hit just over 33-percent and Marshall hit on just under 29-percent. The Panthers pulled ahead by seven before the Herd fought back again to get within two, 65-63, as Wheeler hit another three after an offensive rebound by Sivils. FIU scored four-straight points to get back to a six-point lead with 26 seconds left. Mays buried a three with 16 seconds left to get back to within three. Two more free throws from FIU were the final points of the night.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Sunday, Feb. 13, against the UTEP Miners.

"Pink game on Sunday for the Kay Yow Foundation we would like to have a big crowd in there on their way to the Super Bowl parties," coach Kemper said.

Tipoff against the Miners is set for 1 p.m.
