Marshall Hosts Miners for Sunday’s Pink Out Tilt

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team will host UTEP Sunday at 1 p.m. inside the Cam Henderson Center. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Thundering Herd enters the game with an 11-10 overall record and 6-6 in Conference USA play. The Miners come in at 13-9 overall and 5-7 in league play.
All fans are encouraged to wear pink tomorrow. Those who do will be able to purchase tickets for $2, rather than the program's standard $5 ticket price. All fans who visit the Thundering Herd's concession stand will also be able to enjoy special pink popcorn during the course of the game.
Proceeds from Sunday's game will go to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Last Time Out
The Marshall women's basketball team fought but ultimately fell to the FIU Panthers, 70-66, Thursday night at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
The Panthers improved to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in league play.
Sophomore Savannah Wheeler put up 28 points in the loss. Wheeler now has 1,149 career points and moves into 13th all-time, passing Mary Lopez (1975-79). Senior Aaliyah Dunham scored a season-high 18 points and was 4-of-8 from three. Her four made three-pointers tied her career-high. Dunham added three assists.
Freshman CC Mays had 11 points and set a career-high with three three-pointers. Mays tied for the team lead with four boards and added two steals. Senior Brianah Ferby had seven points and four rebounds. Sophomore Alexis Johnson had two points and three boards.
Junior Lorelei Roper and Kia Sivils had four rebounds each and freshman Aarionna Redman had three boards. Sivils led the Herd with three steals.
FIU quickly jumped out front in the first quarter, building its largest lead of the game at 22-9 with under a minute left in the first. Dunham hit a three with 32 seconds left in the period to bring the deficit to 10.
The Herd started to fight back in the second as Mays drained a three on Marshall's first possession of the quarter. Dunham added another three off a turnover that brought the deficit to four, 22-18, at the 8:29 mark. A three from Wheeler with 6:30 on the clock brought the Herd to within one, 26-25. Wheeler then gave Marshall a brief lead, 27-26, after grabbing a steal and then hitting a layup. FIU got back out in front before the Herd tied the game at 30 with 3:54 to go before the half. The Panthers retook the lead and stayed in front through the rest of the quarter, claiming a 39-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. Wheeler scored 12 points in the second quarter and had 17 at the break.
In the third, Marshall pulled within one again at 41-40 after another three from Mays at the 7:36 mark. The Herd managed to keep the game close, then tied it at 50 with three minutes left in the period. The Herd took another one-point lead, 52-51, less than one minute later on a layup from Dunham. Marshall had another one-point advantage, 54-53, with less than a minute to go in the third. FIU scored the final five points of the quarter to take a four-point lead into the fourth quarter. Dunham led the Herd with eight points in the third. Ferby added five points.
Both teams struggled shooting in the fourth quarter as FIU hit just over 33 percent and Marshall made just under 29 percent. The Panthers pulled ahead by seven before the Herd fought back again to get within two, 65-63, as Wheeler hit another three after an offensive rebound by Sivils. FIU scored four straight points to get back to a six-point lead with 26 seconds left. Mays buried a three with 16 seconds remaining to get back to within three. Two more free throws from FIU were the final points of the night.
The Opponent
The Miners come into Saturday's contest at 13-9 overall and 5-7 in Conference USA.
The team went 8-2 in non-conference play.
Destiny Thurman leads the team with 13.5 points per game and Elinka Arike is the top rebounder, grabbing 7.7 per contest. Katia Gallegos is also a force, averaging 12.0 points, 3.6 assists and 2.0 steals.
Thurman is also UTEP's most accurate 3-point shooter (35.2 percent) and Arike's 82.5 free throw percentage paces the team.
The Miners give up the fewest number of rebounds of anyone in the league (32.5), but are also last in the conference in field goal percentage defense (44.1), 3-point percentage defense (33.3) and blocked shots (1.9).
The head coach is Kevin Baker, who is in his fifth year at the helm of the Miners.
In the all-time series between the two schools, Marshall has won six in a row in the Cam Henderson Center.
