Marshall takes down Radford, University of Charleston
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (7-5) won a pair of dual matches (6-1, 7-0) over Radford and University of Charleston over the course of Saturday afternoon and evening at the 7827 Tennis Center.
Â
"We bounced back well after yesterday," said Marshall head tennis coach John Mercer. "We got to play in two good matches after yesterday. We maintained our level and cleaned up our points, which is what we need to do going forward. Jutte [Van Hansewyck] did a good job today following up her good day yesterday, but up and down the line up they all came back and played good, solid tennis."
Â
The Thundering Herd struck quickly to start against Radford as Aisling McGrane and Gabrielle Clairotte stormed to a 6-0 win on court three. The pairings of Madi Ballow with Jutte Van Hansewyck on court two and Emma Vanderheyden with Liz Stefancic on court one followed suit, in that order.
Â
Hansewyck carried the momentum with the first singles win of the day a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court four. Sophia Hurrion followed it up with a win in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) on court five. Ballow, Vanderheyden and Stefancic rounded out the Herd singles wins in the first dual of the day.
Â
The Herd quickly jumped on UC in the second dual of the day, taking the doubles point, winning on all three courts (6-0, 6-0, 6-2). The pairings remained the same as the Radford dual, with the exception of court two, which saw Hurrion pair with Ballow.
Â
Marshall rumbled on in the second dual singles with Vanderheyden (6-2, 6-0) Stefancic (6-1, 6-0), Van Hansewyck (6-2, 6-0), and Hurrion (6-1, 6-1) doubling their respective win totals on the day. Aisling McGrane won on court five (6-1, 6-0) as Rieke Gillar emerged victorious on court six (7-5, 6-4) to round out the victory, each partaking in the first singles matches of Saturday.
