FINAL STATS
KEMPER PRESS CONFERENCE
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Visiting Marshall outscored the WKU women's basketball team 27-8 in the third quarter and cruised to an 80-62 win Wednesday evening on Senior Night in Bowling Green's E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Thundering Herd improved to 14-12 overall and 9-8 in Conference USA. The Lady Toppers dropped to 18-10 and 11-6 in the league.
The victory was Marshall's first at WKU in 11 tries.
Marshall's Savannah Wheeler and Western's Meral Abdelgawad came into the game tied for the league lead in scoring at 20 points per game. The Thundering Herd won that heads-up matchup too, as Wheeler outpaced the latter 27-17.
Also registering double-digits for the Herd was Brianah Ferby, whose 18 points put her over 1,000 for her career, and Aaliyah Dunham, who had 14 to go with five assists and three steals. Lorelei Roper recorded 10 rebounds, seven on the defensive end.
Abdelgawad led the Tops' scoring attack, while Hope Sivori hit four three-pointers for 12 points, and Jaylin Foster added a double-double effort of 10 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. Abdelgawad also recorded four assists.
The Thundering Herd led by as many as eight (20-12) on a Colclough basket at the 2:16 mark of the first quarter, but WKU game back in the second period and grabbed a five-point advantage (32-27) on a pull-up jumper by Alexis Mead at the 4:20 mark.
Marshall came right back, though, and scored 17 of the half's final 18 points and took a 41-33 lead into the half.
The Herd put the game away in the third quarter, shooting 55.6 percent (10-for-18), while limiting the Tops to just a 2-for-13 clip (15.4 percent). Colclough's layup at the 6:38 mark capped a 19-0 run for the visitors, giving them a 53-33 lead.
MU took its biggest lead (70-42) on a driving layup by Dunham 48 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Tops attempted to rally, but drew no closer than 18 during the balance of the contest.
The Thundering Herd held a commanding 42-22 advantage on points in the paint and a 20-11 edge on points off turnovers. WKU, mostly due to Sivori's contribution, controlled the bench points stat (21-8).
Marshall led the game for 34 minutes, 38 seconds.
"I'm proud of (our players)", said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "It was a good win and this place has been, historically, very difficult for us to play well. We started well and really carried it through. We got a lot of good play out of a lot of people. Savannah (Wheeler) was good and I thought Ferby was great.
"We've already talked about how we have to reload and go play that team again. We're a team that has been on a run before and that's what we're trying to do again. Tonight was, hopefully, a starting point for that."
The two teams will meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center in what will be Senior Day for the Thundering Herd. Marshall will honor Colclough, Dunham, Ferby and Roper in a pregame ceremony.
