Sophomore Marko Sarenac led all scorers with a career-high 18 points. He shot 6-for-11 from the field, including 6-for-10 from three-point range, as he grabbed seven boards.
Junior Taevion Kinsey and redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor each added 16 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Sophomore Goran Miladinovic snagged a team-high 11 boards.
Hilltopper center Jamarion Sharp recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sharp also rejected seven shots.
After WKU scored six of the first eight points, the Herd used an 8-2 streak to grab a 10-8 lead at the 13:38 mark. The Hilltoppers immediately answered with a 7-0 advantage to regain the lead, 15-10, three minutes later.
WKU utilized an 8-0 run from 6:35 to 5:28 to go up 28-19 and closed out the first 20 minutes of play by scoring the last six points of the half. Marshall trailed 39-28 at the break.
The Hilltoppers scored the first two points of the second half, but the Herd answered with an 8-0 streak. It was capped by Kinsey layup to trail by five, 41-36, just over three minutes into the half.
Sarenac made a pair of threes and Kinsey a layup in between points by WKU cut the deficit to two, 46-44, with just under 14 minutes remaining. However, the Hilltoppers answered with a 12-2 run across the next three-and-a-half minutes to go up 12, 58-46.
WKU traded runs with Marshall the rest of the way as the visitors suffered the loss.
"I felt good about the flow of the game in terms of being able to anticipate how they were going to play," said Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni. "We had a good little flow offensively. Marko (Sarenac) did what he was supposed to do. I thought Andy (Taylor) handled the ball pretty good and moved it pretty decently.
"We made a lot of turnovers that led to buckets on the other end. Therein lies the game. And it wasn't necessarily about what they did, it was about what we did."
NOTES
The Herd made a three in its 1001st consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.
