Ballow, Hurrion pick up singles victories

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University tennis team (7-9) dropped its final dual of the weekend, 4-2, against Michigan State Sunday afternoon at the 7827 Tennis Center.

"I thought it was a really good college tennis match," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "We were a couple of points away from pulling off a really good win; it bodes well for us. I thought both teams competed very hard and that made it a good day for people to watch.

"It would have been nice to come out on top, but over time you hope to win the majority of them. Sometimes you lose. Hopefully, this will make us better. All of these teams we play are in the top 75, so we'll keep gaining experience and doing better."

It was a battle early in the doubles on court no. 2 as the set stayed within one game through the first eight, but ultimately the Spartans pulled away to take it, 6-4. The Thundering Herd rebounded with Gabrielle Clairotte and Aisling McGrane recording a 6-2 win on court no. 3. Emma Vanderheyden and Liz Stefanic struggled early, dropping the first three games, before reeling off six straight to win the set and the doubles point for the home side.

Marshall pressed the advantage as Madi Ballow notched the first singles win of the afternoon, defeating Maja Pietrowicz 6-2, 6-3. The Spartans gained the lead with wins on courts three, four and five. The battle on court no. 1 lasted for over two hours between MSU's Mary Lewis and Vanderheyden, with the Spartan taking the three-set victory. Sophia Hurrion on court six was leading 6-0, 4-3 but did not finish due to clinch play.
