DENTON, Texas – Marshall softball redshirt junior pitcher Sydney Nester was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Â
Nester has a 4.0 grade point average while starring in the circle for the Herd. She earned her bachelor's degree in sport management in just three years while at North Carolina State. Nester is working on her master's degree in communication studies with Marshall.
Â
Nester has already put her name into the Marshall softball record books. She was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week six times; no other Herd hurler had earned more than three in a season. Nester was the fastest to reach 100 and 200 strikeouts in a season. She recorded her 100th strikeout in her 58th inning, besting the old mark of 63. Nester then hit 200 strikeouts in 137 innings, beating the old record of 153.
Â
The Hillsville, Virginia, native began her Marshall career becoming the first pitcher in team history to start a season with back-to-back double-digit strikeout performances and shutouts after blanking Saint Joseph's and Villanova. She had 13 strikeouts in her Herd debut in six innings versus Saint Joseph's and then tallied 11 in five innings against Villanova.
Â
The right-hander is tied for the most double-digit strikeout games in a season with 12, and is tied for the second-most shutouts with 11. Nester tossed four-straight shutouts from March 4-11, putting on a show for the Marshall crowd during the first home games of the year. She tied her career-high of 15 strikeouts twice this season hitting the mark against Fairfield on March 13 and at Florida Atlantic on April 8.
Â
Going into the Conference USA Tournament, Nester has a 1.73 ERA, 24-9 record and 284 strikeouts in 210.2 innings pitched.
Â
Marshall earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament and await the winner of No. 5 Florida Atlantic and No. 8 UTSA. The Herd will play Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT.
