Herd welcomes six transfers and two more freshmen
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women's basketball head coach Tony Kemper announced the addition of eight players to the roster for the upcoming 2022-23 season. The Herd welcomes six transfers and two more freshmen.
New to suit up for the Green & White will be transfers Kendall Miller (Akron), Ashley Tudor (Radford), Roshala Scott (Southeast Missouri), Terah Harness (USC Upstate), Abby Beeman (Shepherd University), Shanniah Wright (Georgetown) along with freshmen Peyton Ilderton and Olivia Ziolkowski.
"This is an exciting class for Marshall Women's Basketball," coach Kemper said. "We have addressed every need with players who have produced at a high level prior to their time here. They are impressive student-athletes who are excited to be at Marshall both academically and competitively. We are looking forward to everyone reporting in July and getting to work!"
Kendall Miller is a 5-9 guard who not only played for Akron, but is also from Akron, Ohio. She attended St. Vincent-St. Mary before joining the Zips in 2018 as a freshman. Miller is a graduate transfer after playing four seasons in her hometown. She appeared in 93 games. This past season, Miller averaged 4.7 points, 2.1 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game. She had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.61 in 2021-22 (which would have been good for second on the Herd last year) and finished her Akron career with a 1.29 assist-to-turnover ratio. Miller scored a season-best 10 points against Miami (OH) and dished out six assists versus Ball State. The graduate transfer played against Wake Forest in the first round of the 2021-22 WNIT and had five assists, two steals and no turnovers. She was an Academic All-Mid-American Conference member in her junior and senior years as an education major.
"Kendall comes to us having a wealth of experience playing in a really competitive league," coach Kemper said. "Defensively, she can defend multiple positions at a high level. She is going to provide us with great leadership while making an immediate impact on the court."
Ashley Tudor is a 5-11 guard who spent the past two seasons with the Radford Highlanders and is familiar with the Herd. She played against Marshall twice in her career. Tudor played just her second career game on the Cam Henderson Center floor on Dec. 6, 2020, scoring eight points as Radford fell to the Herd 69-58. The two teams met again on Nov. 14, 2021, in Radford. Tudor had a great game leading the Highlanders with 14 points as she was 7-of-8 from the line and added six boards. Marshall won that contest as well 68-64. Last year as a COVID sophomore, Tudor averaged 8.1 points and 4.5 boards per contest. She scored in double-figures 10 times in 2021-22 with a season-high 19 against High Point. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native played her high school ball at Mercy McAuley.
"Ashley's versatility and athleticism will make a huge impact on our team right away," coach Kemper said. "She will excel at Marshall through her ability to score, rebound, and defend. We have played against her the last two seasons and I'm ecstatic to have her in a Marshall uniform for the next three."
Roshala Scott is a 5-8 guard who played three seasons at Southeast Missouri State (SEMO). She will have two years of eligibility remaining after the COVID season. Scott was the Redhawks second leading scorer last season in points per game with 10.8, totaling 216 points good for third on the squad. She averaged 4.3 rebounds, also good for third on the team, and added 60 assists (3.0 per game), 24 steals and 10 blocks. Scott appeared in 78 contests with SEMO including 32 games in 2019-20, her freshman year. She put up a total of 642 points with a career-high 25 against Belmont. Scott had a career-best seven assists versus Eastern Illinois in 2021. She is a native of Earle, Arkansas, and played her high school ball at Earle High School.
"Ro comes in and immediately elevates our athleticism on the perimeter," coach Kemper said. "She had a ton of success scoring the ball in the OVC and we fully expect her to do the same in the Sun Belt Conference. Ro is a fierce competitor that will help elevate the play of others around her."
Terah Harness is a 5-9 guard who finished her freshman year at USC Upstate. Last season, Harness averaged 8.2 points per game putting up double-digits in 12 contests. In two games against Winthrop, she scored 18 points in the first game, then a season-best 19 in the second game combining to hit 11-of-23 from beyond the arc. Harness netted 60 3-pointers which would have tied for first with the Herd last year. The New Carlisle, Ohio, native was a member of the Big South All-Freshman Team and helped the Spartans to a 22-win season. Harness appeared in all 30 games and started 28, averaging just under 30 minutes per game. She played at Tecumseh High School.
"Terah had a very successful freshman campaign where she showed her ability to score the basketball," coach Kemper said. "She is an elite shooter with a high IQ. She has an incredibly high ceiling and I expect her to come in and be a threat as soon she steps on campus."
Abby Beeman is a 5-4 guard who starred for Shepherd University (Division II) and piled up awards in two full seasons with the Rams. Her freshman year in 2019-20, the Ridgely, West Virginia, native led the team in scoring (19.7 ppg), assists (7.3 apg), steals (95) and minutes played (38.5 mpg). She was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Freshman of the Year and the First Team All-PSAC East Team. Shepherd played just two games in 2020-21 before the remainder of the season was cancelled due to COVID, and Beeman still scored 38 points (19.0 ppg). This past season, Beeman averaged 19.0 per game yet again scoring a total of 628 points. She had 16 games over 20 points and three over 30. Beeman was named to the 2021-22 NCAA II WBCA Coaches' All-America Team as a well as a D2CAA All-America selection. She helped her team to a 25-8 record and a berth in the Atlantic Region where she was named to the All-Tournament team. Beeman scored a total of 1,258 points over 65 games. In an exhibition contest against future Sun Belt opponent James Madison, Beeman scored nine points while grabbing 11 boards, dishing four assists and three steals. She played at Frankfort High School.
"Abby is a great in-state addition from the transfer portal," coach Kemper said. "She is a tremendous scorer, consistent playmaker, and a Division 2 All-American. She has produced for years in all phases of the game, and she thrives off competition. Abby wants the ball in her hands at the end of the game, that is a great quality in a player."
Shanniah Wright is a 6-1 forward/center and is a graduate transfer from Georgetown. The Brooklyn, New York, native appeared in 78 games for the Hoyas. She was ranked in the ESPN Top 100 coming out of high school at Polytechnic Preparatory Day School. This past season, Wright averaged 4.6 points and 3.2 boards per contest. She shot 50.5-percent from the floor and an even better 53.9-percent during Big East conference games for the year. Wright scored a career-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting versus DePaul. She grabbed a season-best eight rebounds against Seton Hall. Wright shot 48.9-percent from the floor during her four seasons with the Hoyas. She is also a multi-time Big East All-Academic member.
"Shanniah brings a plethora of experience playing four seasons in The Big East," coach Kemper said. "She has a skillset unique to post players where she can score inside but also step out and hit jump shots. She is a high character student-athlete who will have an impact on our program on and off the court."
Peyton Ilderton is a 5-6 guard and an incoming freshman from Logan High School (Logan, W.Va.). She helped lead her school to its first Class AAA State Championship and was named First Team All-State as a captain. In her junior year, Ilderton averaged 21.5 points per game and was also honored as a First Team All-State selection. Last season she averaged 23 points, 4.9 boards per game and just over four steals per contest. Ilderton was named Cardinal Conference Player of the Year.
"Peyton's decorated high school career speaks for itself," coach Kemper said. "We are thrilled about her choosing Marshall. She will be a fan favorite with the passion she brings daily as well as being from right down the road in Logan, West Virginia."
Olivia Ziolkowski is a 6-0 forward from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, West Virginia. She was a 2022 Class AAAA All-State Honorable Mention and helped lead her team to the Class AAAA Regionals. In her senior season, Ziolkowski averaged 10.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest. She plans to major in exercise science as well as eventually attending med school.
"Olivia brings a ton of energy and competitiveness to our team," coach Kemper said. "She is a great student with a bright future ahead of her. Our fans will love cheering for her and I'm excited to bring another West Virginia player to Marshall."
