Senior honored for work off the course in the community
IRVING, Texas – Marshall women's golf senior Jackie Schmidt was honored with the Conference USA Spring Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced Tuesday.
Â
Each member school of Conference USA has a winner for three different periods during the year of fall, winter, and spring sports. The spring sports for 2022 include baseball, men's and women's golf, softball, outdoor track & field, men's and women's tennis, and beach volleyball. The award honors the league's student-athletes with significant community service endeavors, excellent academic standing, and notable athletic achievements.
Â
"I am honored and humbled to receive this award," Schmidt said. "Growing up my parents taught me the importance of giving back to your community. When I began school at Marshall, the overwhelming support from the community was just another reason I wanted to give back. If it wasn't for the warm welcome the Huntington community gave me and many other athletes, our experience there would not have been the same.
Â
"I hope to give back and make others feel as welcome and encouraged the way others have done for me. Volunteering can help change people's lives, and I strive to touch other's lives in as many ways as I can."
Â
Schmidt has been heavily involved on and off the course during her time with the Green & White. Over the past four years, Schmidt has spent numerous hours working with the Student Athlete Association Committee (SAAC) Community Service team. The Galt, California, native has volunteered her time at the Soup Kitchen, Kids Golf Camp, First Tee, Ladies' Golf Clinic, True Love Rescue, The Marshall Sweetheart Clinic and Crab Fee.
Â
Schmidt has also been a star in the classroom at Marshall as a four-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and a two-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal for a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better. She earned her second medal at the end of her senior season. Schmidt is a two-time Women's Golf Coaches' Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar Athlete and is in line to be honored for a third time.
Â
Along with her work in the community, and in the classroom, Schmidt rebounded to have a great senior season. She played in just two events during the COVID shortened 2020-21 season while also dealing with an injury. In 2021-22, Schmidt competed in all 10 events for the Herd and was Marshall's top finisher three times. Her best finish came at the Butler Fall Invitational where she was tied for 12th. Schmidt scored her first sub-par round on the third and final day of the Golfweek Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate. She showed great improvement during the tournament lowering her score by seven strokes in the second round and another seven-stroke improvement in the third round to finish with the 1-under 71. Schmidt was named Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week on Nov. 3 after tying for 14th overall at the Grandover Fall Classic.
