Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Behind goals by sophomore Courtney Corcoran and freshman Makai Laguines, the Marshall University women's soccer team (1-0-2) shutout the Morehead State Eagles (1-2-0) 2-0 on Thursday at Hoops Family Field. The Herd outshot the Eagles 15-5, including 6-5 in shots on target.
Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth picked up her first career victory in her collegiate debut with five saves in the shutout.
"It has been a reaction in training," Marshall women's soccer head coach Michael Swan said about finishing today's match with a win. "We left the field Sunday disappointed conceding the late goal. The focus on Tuesday, when we came off a day off, the focus yesterday and today, we can't fault them. It's a different group with a new mentality."
Graduate student Kat Gonzalez came out of the gates with a shot in the fourth minute, but it was saved by Eagles goalkeeper Michelle Jerantowski.
Then in the 14th minute, junior Abi Hugh kicked a corner to the far post and found the head of Corcoran, who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. It was Hugh's second assist of the season for Marshall.
MSU nearly tied the match on shots by Kate Larbes at the 21:51 and 22:01 marks, but Wolgemuth was there to save both attempts and preserve the 1-0 Herd lead.
Freshman Bailey Fisher fired shots on goal in the 32nd and 37th minutes, respectively, but both were saved as the Green and White led 1-0 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Laguines took the ball from the Eagles of a deflection in the 50th minute, took a shot just inside the 18-yard box and tallied the first goal of her career to give Marshall a 2-0 lead.
Wolgemuth then made saves in the 50th, 54th and 59th minutes to maintain the shutout.
Sophomore Ava Hall had a shot at the 80:34 mark, but the Eagles keeper made the save as Herd took the contest.
The Herd has had five different student-athletes score goals this season.
