Thundering Herd Volleyball Prepares for Miami Invitational

First road tournament for Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team (1-2) heads to Oxford, Ohio, for the Miami Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Herd will face Bellarmine, Miami (OH) and Middle Tennessee at the tournament.

Series History:
vs. Bellarmine – Series is tied 4-4, last meeting Sept. 3, 1986 (3-0 Marshall win)
vs. Miami (OH) – Miami (OH) leads 14-7, last meeting Aug. 28, 2021 in Huntington, West Virginia (3-2 Marshall win)
vs. Middle Tennessee – Marshall leads 11-5, last meeting Oct. 2, 2021 in Huntington, West Virginia (3-1 Middle Tennessee win)
 
Brynn Brown had a tremendous start to the regular season at the Marshall Invitational last weekend. The sophomore setter recorded a pair of triple-doubles in a win against Evansville on Friday (33 assists, 16 digs and 10 kills) and against Wright State on Saturday (29 assists, 13 kills and 10 digs). The Toledo, Ohio, native has a team-high .473 attacking percentage.
 
Outside hitter Macy McElhaney leads the Herd 32 kills after the opening weekend.
 
Libero Kaitlyn Gehler is averaging 4.14 digs per set through three matches to lead the Green and White.
 
Meanwhile in blocks, middle blocker Lydia Montague recorded 13 at the Marshall Invitational, with middle blocker Essence Clerkley following with nine.

The Opponents
Bellarmine
The Knights enter the weekend 2-1 after taking contests from St. Francis (PA) and Gardner-Webb, while falling to Bucknell.
 
Jayme Scott led the Bellarmine offense with 3.25 kills per set. On defense, Anna Lococo averaged 4.58 digs per set last weekend. Carissa Reyes had a team-leading five service aces and came up with 22 digs while playing in 12 sets.
 
Miami (OH)
The RedHwaks are 1-2 after the first week of the season after defeating Bradley and falling to WKU and Kansas City.
 
Ellie Hansen has a team-best 2.62 kills per set, Hayden Hicks leads the squad 97 assists. Defensively, Margo Lawson is averaging 3.17 digs per set to lead Miami (OH)
 
Middle Tennessee
The Blue Raiders dropped their opening match of the season to Portland, but rallied to win its next two matches over Sacramento State and Nevada.
 
Kayla Henley leads Middle Tennessee in kills (31) and points (36.0) while ranking second in digs (29) and total blocks (10) after the opening weekend of the season.
