Herd Volleyball to Host Marshall Invite; Blackout Game Friday, Local Heroes Night Saturday

The Herd returns home after capturing the Miami Invitational Championship

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (3-3) returns home to the Cam Henderson Center on Friday and Saturday as it hosts the Marshall Invite. Also competing in the tournament are Charleston Southern, Kent State and Murray State.
 
PROMOTIONS
Friday night's contest against Charleston Southern will be the Blackout Game. We want you to wear black so we can blackout The Cam on Friday night.
 
Saturday night against Kent State is Local Heroes Night. We will honor all those who contribute to the community, including firefighters, EMS, healthcare workers, teachers and many others.

Series History:
vs. Charleston Southern – This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs
vs. Kent State – The Herd leads the all-time series 8-7, last meeting was on Sept. 14, 2013, in Huntington, West Virginia (3-2 Marshall win)
vs. Murray State – The Racers lead the all-time series 3-1, last meeting was on Sept. 30, 1989, in Huntington, West Virginia (3-0 Murray State win)


The Herd went 2-1 last weekend to capture the Miami Invitational Championship. Junior Regan Tinkle was named the tournament MVP as sophomore Brynn Brown and fifth-year senior Kaitlyn Gehler were named to the all-tournament team.
 
Tinkle recorded 41 kills (3.23 per set) and a .341 hitting percentage last weekend. The Hagerstown, Indiana, native tallied a career-high 19 kills in a 3-2 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
 
Gehler collected an impressive 70 digs last weekend en route to being named the Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. The libero from Waterloo, Wisconsin, leads the SBC in digs per set (4.95).
 
With 28 assists, 13 kills and 10 digs against Wright State on Friday, Brown earned her nation-leading third triple-double of the season. The Toledo, Ohio, native is one of only 10 student-athletes to record a triple-double this season. The setter also had a .600 hitting percentage in the match, seventh-best hitting percentage in a match this season within the conference (12 kill minimum).
 
Senior Lydia Montague is first in total blocks with 29 and second in the Sun Belt in blocks per set at 1.16. Montague, a middle blocker from Lehi, Utah, had 16 blocks at the Miami Invitational.
 
Graduate student Macy McElhaney has a team-best 62 kills and six service aces this season.

The Opponents
Charleston Southern
The Buccaneers come to Huntington with a 4-3 record. They lead the Big South Conference in assists per set (11.75), hitting percentage (.235) and kills per set (12.75).
 
Angelika Rusin leads the Big South in digs per set (4.89) and total digs (137), while Peyton Thompson has a league high 101 kills.
 
Kent State
The Golden Flashes are 4-2 this. Kent State leads the Mid-American Conference in several statistical categories, including service aces (50), digs (382), opponent's hitting percentage (.149) and assists (305).
 
Danie Tyson leads the MAC with a .442 attacking percentage and is sixth with 22 blocks.
 
Murray State
The Racers sit on a 2-3 record this season.
 
Federica Nuccio leads her side in kills per set (3.29). Bailey DeMier leads Murray State with 187 assists (8.9 per set).
