Marshall softball pitcher will be honored at Carroll County High School in Virginia
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University softball pitcher Sydney Nester will be honored at her high school alma mater of Carroll County High School in Hillsville, Virginia this weekend. The redshirt senior pitcher will be inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023 on Friday, January 27.
The 2022 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year for the Thundering Herd will be inducted alongside two other honorees, including a high school teammate from her team's 2015 State Championship winning team.
Nester was named the 2016 Virginia Gatorade High School Player of the Year, posting a high school record of 55-2, with an ERA of 0.59.
"It is so exciting for me to be going home for the Carroll County High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony," Nester said. "Mr. Chuck Thompson, my former principal is going to present me and that means so much. He is someone that I can admire and respect more than I can adequately relate. It's special to be inducted with Emily Cook, a teammate and someone with whom I've played a lot of travel and school games. Frank Beamer, former VT coach and Carroll native, is going to be honored also. I'm going to have good company!"
"I'm proud to have grown up in Hillsville, Virginia and I'm proud to have been able to represent my community in a positive way. There are so many good people there and I'm appreciative to be one of them. It's been that upbringing that has also made me so thankful for what I've found here at Marshall University because I respect and treasure that tight community."
In 2022, Nester posted a 2.36 ERA with 26 wins and 294 strikeouts, all career-bests in her first season for Coach Megan Smith Lyon in Huntington. Other accolades from the Virginia native last year included six Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, All-Conference USA First Team, and 2022 NFCA Mideast All-Region First Team recognition.
The graduate senior and the Marshall softball team will get the 2023 season underway at the Florida Spring Games on Friday, February 10.
