Herd guard eclipses 1,000 career points, scores 25 in Marshall's 71-59 win over Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – Marshall's Roshala Scott made the most out of a trip to her home state of Arkansas on Saturday.

Scott scored 25 points while also notching the 1,000th point of her collegiate career as Marshall's women's basketball team completed a weekend road sweep with a 71-59 win over Arkansas State at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

"I thought today was our most complete performance in a while," Marshall coach Tony Kemper said. "They got us on a couple offensive rebounds and a couple time in transition, but I thought we were pretty solid throughout the day."

With the win, Marshall (12-9, 5-5 Sun Belt Conference) earned its third straight victory while also completing its second road sweep of the league season.

Unlike Thursday's win in which the Herd rallied back from a double-digit deficit, Marshall set the tone offensively from the start with Scott seizing control early.

Scott, a native of Earle, Ark., came into the game needing nine points to hit 1,000 for her career, but wasted no time in getting the mark in front of friends and family in attendance.

The junior guard hit her first five shots from the floor, including a jumper from the foul line with 4:46 left in the first quarter to hit 1,000 for her career.

"I thought Ro was pretty special," Kemper said. "It's neat that she got her 1000th point back home. She had a lot of people here today. We're certainly a different team when we've got her fully locked in and playing well. She wasn't great the other night and we talked a little about bouncing back. Obviously, if she had 25 tonight, that's a pretty good bounce-back."

Scott's jumper came during a 17-5 run in which the Thundering Herd built a 12-point lead in the first quarter.

Marshall led 39-34 at halftime and fended off each rally attempt from the Red Wolves. The key to keeping the Thundering Herd in front was the strong play of Abby Beeman on both ends of the floor.

Beeman nearly had a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, 12 rebounds (matched a career-high) and seven assists while keeping the Marshall offense in a good flow.

"I thought we attacked offensively pretty well and made shots throughout the game," Kemper said. "It was pretty steady and stable."

Marshall kept Arkansas State in check on the glass, staying virtually even in the rebounding battle, which was a big focus coming into the contest.

Defensive success was also attributed to the job done on Arkansas State guard Lauryn Pendleton, who came into the contest averaging 12.3 points. Pendleton finished with two points on 1-of-7 shooting.

Samantha Lafon finished with nine points and seven rebounds – four offensive – for the Herd.

Marshall returns to action at 6 p.m. on Thursday when it starts a four-game homestand against Appalachian State at Cam Henderson Center.
