HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (12-12, 4-6 Sun Belt) captured a five-set thriller (25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 15-10) from the App State Mountaineers (12-9, 3-7 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
"App definitely answered back to what we did," Herd Volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the win. "It was good and clean for a minute, but we got really sloppy. We were undisciplined as far as our blocking assignments and where we were supposed to go defensively. I'm just happy. There were great rallies. It was great volleyball. That's what you want."
Kylee Stokes registered a career-high 21 kills in the win as Brynn Brown recorded her second double-double of the weekend with 47 assists and 25 digs.
Riley Winslow had a career-high 26 digs with Jazminn Parrish finishing just behind with a career-high 25 and 11 kills for a double-double.
In the winner take all fifth set, the Mountaineers took the first point. However, that would be the visitor's only lead of the final set. The Herd captured six of the next eight points to take a 6-3 advantage and force an App State timeout. A Parrish kill gave MU its largest lead of the frame at 12-6 as a Stokes kill sealed the match for Marshall with a 15-10 win.
The Herd took the first set wire-to-wire, 25-20, with the score only being tied once (1-1) in the opening set. MU accumulated a .250 hitting percentage to start the match.
Marshall and App battled in the second set. The second frame saw the score tied 14 times with eight lead changes, but The Herd prevailed thanks to a stout attack with a match-best .289 hitting percentage to take set by a narrow margin of 25-23.
