HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (12-13, 4-7 Sun Belt) fell in its weekend opener against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (16-7, 11-0 Sun Belt) in four sets, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23), Friday evening in the Cam Henderson Center.
"We need to clean up some things," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said. "Even though our offensive numbers were good, we didn't put power on the ball. I was happy with certain pieces but did not enjoy our blocking. Coastal isn't 11-0 in conference for no reason. They are consistent and stable on both sides of the pin."
Brynn Brown registered a double-double with 44 assists and a team-high 14 digs as Kylee Stokes had a team-high 13 kills.
The Herd came out blazing. Marshall hit .548 in the opening set finishing 19 of its 31 attacks and committing just two errors. The home side took the first set by the narrow margin of 25-23 as Essence Clerkley and Jazminn Parrish finished the set with a kill each.
The Chanticleers captured the second and third sets 25-19 and 15-15, respectively.
MU nearly forced a winner-take all fifth set as it had a .393 hitting percentage in the fourth. Marshall fell in the fourth 25-23 as CCU took the match.
