Marshall’s first win of Coach Kim Caldwell era features 18-point comeback

Box Score
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Coach Kim Caldwell era for Marshall University women's basketball is certainly living up to the excitement.

The Thundering Herd (1-1) defeated Chattanooga (2-1), 79-74 on the road Sunday. Marshall trailed by as much as 18 to the Preseason SoCon favorites. Senior guard Roshala Scott scored a new career-high 31 points in the comeback victory.

Coach Caldwell earned her first win as the coach of the Herd, as the team won its first game under the program's new style of high-intensity and pressure.

"It takes a while when you play 11 players, it takes a while to get your team chemistry, it takes a while to settle into your role." Marshall first-year Head Coach Kim Caldwell said. "Everything is new, you have been taught for 15 years to run back on defense and we're asking you to run up, so it will take time to figure it out."

"It is going to be ugly early and take some time, but I think I have a team that doesn't quit, and they play really hard and they are fun to coach."

The Herd outscored the Mocs by 13 in the second half, with Scott scoring the final two points in the third quarter to bring the Herd within one. The Herd forced eight turnovers in the third to reel in Chattanooga after trailing by 14 at the half.

Marshall improved on its turnovers from Thursday night. The Herd forced 19 UTC turnovers as opposed to committing just eight of its own.

MU took its first lead on a Roshala layup with 7:44 remaining, and led by as much as eight after a Breanna Campbell free throw.

Chattanooga would come back to take a one point lead with 1:34 remaining when sophomore Sydni Scott connected on a corner three to retake the lead. Marshall sealed the win with made free throws. Coach Caldwell's team finished 18-22 from the line.
