Box Score
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Marshall Thundering Herd's first Sun Belt Conference game under Coach Kim Cadlwell went as well as the team could have hoped for.
The Herd (7-5, 1-0 SBC) defeated the defending league champions, Southern Miss (7-4, 0-1 SBC) on the road by an 87-72 margin. Coach Caldwell's team made 13 triples, a road season-high, including five from sophomore Sydni Scott.
"It was a big win, we played a really good team on the road," Coach Caldwell said. "We played really good team ball, multiple people came in and contributed. We still turned the ball over too much, but we did enough. It was really good to see that energy and that effort and that level of basketball on the road."
The Herd forced 17 Golden Eagle turnovers, while scoring 23 points off those takeaways. MU's pressure wore out the hosts in the second half, outscoring USM by 13 after halftime.
In addition to Scott's team-high 19, Breanna Campbell, Abby Beeman and Mahogany Matthews each contributed with 18, 16 and 13 each. The Herd led by two at the break following a Matthews putback. Marshall made seven triples in the first half.
