Herd SB Battles Back Saturday, Defeats Colgate

Marshall splits two games on second day of Florida Spring Games
LEESBURG, Fla. — The Marshall softball team (2-1) came from behind in dramatic fashion to beat Colgate - and an impending Florida storm - 5-4.
The game was the second of the day in which Marshall coach Megan Smith Lyon's team came back from multiple runs down to tie it in the seventh.
"We showed a lot of fight and grit today," Smith said. "Really proud of them, the first game was a tough one, we couldn't quite pull it out but we are really proud of the way our team came out and fought in game two against a really good team. We are excited and ready to play tomorrow!"
Second Game: Marshall 5, Colgate 4
As an impending thunderstorm rolled through Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex, the Herd rallied in the final frame to win.
Sydney Bickel walked to open the 7th, and Alex Coleman bunted for a hit, setting up Bub Feringa's productive RBI groundout to tie what was once a three-run Raider lead.
Autumn Owen's single down the right field line completed the Marshall comeback, putting the Herd back on top. It was Owen's solo home run that provided the early scoring for the Herd.
The lead was enough for Sydney Nester, who took the circle in the final frame in a downpour, only to finish the Raiders in order to preserve the victory.
Nester, who started her second game of the weekend, battled through a pair of early Raider hits and unearned runs. The grad senior managed to strike out nine, earning her second win of the season.
First Game: Butler 7, Marshall 6
The Herd opened the day with a rally falling just short against the Butler Bulldogs (1-2).
The rally started in the 4th, with Owen slugging the Herd's first home run of 2023 to trim the deficit to 6-1.
After a scoreless 5th, Marshall had four runs on four hits in the 6th. Grace Chelemen singled and stole second, to be brought home by an RBI knock by Feringa. An Emily Allen single was followed by a Rielly Lucas two-run shot to bring MU to within a run.
Coach Smith's side would tie it when down to the final out in the 7th. Owen's knock into left field tied the game at six.
The Herd trailed after a five-run outburst by the Bulldogs in the 3rd. Senior Cailey Joyce would help to settle the rally. The Mechanicsburg, Pa. native finished with three strikeouts over four innings in relief, allowing just two hits.
After leveling in the top half, Butler would walk-off on a base on balls to escape with a one-run win.
UP NEXT
Marshall will have the opportunity to face the Butler Bulldogs once more. First pitch is at 9:00 a.m.Sunday to close out the Spring Games in Florida.
