Marshall battles back from large deficit, but Eagles hold on for 63-61 win
STATESBORO, Ga. – Marshall's women's basketball team continued its trend of rallying back from big deficits, but the Thundering Herd could not get over the hump in a 63-61 loss to Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Ga.
Sydni Scott's 3-pointer combined with Roshala Scott's basket with 40 seconds left to pull the Thundering Herd within two. Marshall got the stop it needed to get the final shot, but a 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell off the rim as time expired.
"They really took it to us early and that was disappointing," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "By the time we leveled off and played better, we'd dug ourselves too deep of a hole."
Sydni Scott was a catalyst for Marshall (15-11, 8-7 SBC) in the loss. She came in and knocked down five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 17 points.
"She's played really well," Kemper said. "Tonight, she was the best player we had on the floor."
Sydni Scott's performance was part of a second half in which Marshall shot over 50 percent from the floor.
However, Georgia Southern was able to hold on for the win, based on a large rebounding discrepancy that kept the Herd on defense for much of the contest.
Georgia Southern owned a 47-26 advantage on the glass, led by a 19-point, 14-rebound effort from Terren Ward.
"The rebounding was substantial," Kemper said. "They missed 34 shots and got 19 of them."
In addition to Sydni Scott, Marshall got 13 points from Mahogany Matthews and 11 points and five assists from Abby Beeman.
Marshall stays in Georgia for its next contest – a 2 p.m. contest at Georgia State on Saturday afternoon.
