Roshala Scott finishes with 18 points in loss to Panthers
ATLANTA, Ga. – Marshall's women's basketball team led in the final minutes, but was unable to hold on in a 55-54 loss to Georgia State at the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
It marked the second time in three days that the team had the game come down to the final possession with a shot to win it.
"That's a disappointing day," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "We didn't start very fast and obviously didn't make enough plays right at the end there. We made some, but we needed one more and didn't get it done."
The contest had plenty of exciting throughout with 10 ties and 10 lead changes in a back-and-forth affair – many of which came in a second half in which neither team was able to establish control.
Abby Beeman converted a three-point play with 1:45 to go that gave Marshall a 54-53 lead, but Georgia State's Nyla Jean connected on a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left to put the Panthers on top.
After a pair of Georgia State fouls, Marshall got a good look as Roshala Scott found Sydni Scott, but Sydni Scott's 3-point attempt fell off the rim as the Panthers avenged a 50-45 loss to Marshall in Huntington two weeks ago by making more plays down the stretch.
"Tonight, I didn't think our intensity was very good for 40 minutes," Kemper said. "I thought it was good in spurts, but it wasn't very good for 40. We have to be more consistent. That's something we've talked about all year."
Marshall trailed by as many as 14 in the first half to the Panthers, but the Thundering Herd used a 21-4 run over the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room, which set the tone for the exciting finish.
In that second quarter rally, Marshall connected on five 3-pointers with two each from Roshala Scott and Terah Harness.
Roshala Scott finished with a team-high 18 points in the loss while Beeman added 10 points and five assists. Sydni Scott, who made her first career start, finished with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that produced the lead.
Marshall returns to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against Old Dominion for Senior Day at Cam Henderson Center.
