HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (24-6, 13-4 Sun Belt) picked up a big road win over the James Madison Dukes (20-10, 11-6 Sun Belt), 92-83, on Wednesday night to start its final road trip of the regular season.
"The winner tonight was the fans. It was a helluva game," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the back-and-forth contest. "It was a fun game to spectate and a fun game to coach. We got the breaks towards the end of the game with two games so closely matched, and you get a run towards the end of the game like that, you win."
With neither team leading by more than six during the first 38 plus minutes of the contest, Marshall saw its lead sit at just two points, 83-81, with 1:33 on the clock after a Dukes layup.
However, the Herd was clutch at the free-throw line down the stretch as it made seven of its eight attempts, including Obinna Anochili-Killen making all four of his attempts, as the defense held JMU 0-for-5 from the field and forced a turnover to hold on for the road win.
"To be honest, I've never really thought about it. I've always thought about winning," Taevion Kinsey said when asked about moving into second all-time in program history in scoring.
Kinsey, who scored a game-high 31 points, surpassed Skip Henderson's mark of 2,574 points with a layup five minutes into the contest to become the second-leading scorer in program history. The Columbus, Ohio, native also dished out a game-high seven assists in the contest.
With 19 points, Andrew Taylor fell one point short of his fifth straight game of 20 or more points. Anochili-Killen tallied 12 points and finished tied with Taylor for the team-high in boards with nine, one short of a double-double each. Anochili-Killen also rejected three shots.
Notes
Marshall is 9-4 on the road this season. It made a season-high 27 free throws on 34 attempts.
Kinsey has scored 20 or more points in each of the last four games. He now has three games of 30 or more points this season and 12 games of at least 20 points and five assists. Kinsey sits at 2,601 points for his career. He is 38 away from passing Jon Elmore's program mark of 2,638. The fifth-year senior also has 998 made field goals in his career and is three away from passing Skip Henderson's program mark of 1,000.
Kamdyn Curfman made his 100th three-point basket of the season. He's just the fifth player in Marshall men's basketball program history to do so.
The duo of Kinsey and Taylor are the lone pair of teammates in country averaging 20 or more points per game as Kinsey sits 22.2 and Taylor at 20.1.
