HARRISONBURG, Va. –The Marshall women's basketball team crashed the party to close the regular season at the Atlantic Union Bank Center at JMU.
20 points from Abby Beeman - including three from midcourt at the third quarter buzzer - propelled the Herd to a 71-54 victory over the Sun Belt regular season champions.
"I thought we went after it physically, I thought we played as good of defense without fouling as maybe ever," Marshall head coach Tony Kemper said. "They [JMU] are super talented at every position. To do what we did defensively in their house, I am very proud of them. It is a good day for us, we needed to feel better going into Pensacola and we managed to get that done."
The Herd lead ballooned to as much as 20 in the final quarter. A 16-point scoring run from the 2:35 in the third to 6:28 the early fourth gave Marshall control of the game.
After JMU answered with its own 11-point run to cut the lead to nine, Marshall produced a pair of defensive stops including a Mahogany Matthews drawn charge to end the momentum.
Roshala Scott converted on a pair of ensuing free throws to put the Herd back on top by double figures. Scott finished the season scoring more than 10 points in 28 of Marshall's 29 games.
The 13-point road win is Marshall's largest road win of the season.
Marshall now meets Coastal Carolina in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wed. March 1.
