PHOENIX, Ariz. – Marshall's Emily McLatchey and Olivia Kochan led the Thundering Herd women's golf team in the first day of the GCU Invitational at GCU Championship Golf Course on Monday afternoon.

The first day of the GCU Invitational featured 36 holes as teams competed in the first two rounds of the Invitational.

McLatchey followed up a 1-over 73 in round one with an Even par 72 in round two to stand at 1-over for the tournament – good for a tie in 17th place currently.

Out of 95 participants, Kochan finished with one of only nine rounds of 70 or better in round two as she fired a 2-under 70 that left her at 2-over for the tournament.

"It was exciting to see Olivia post a low score for us and for Emily to post two solid rounds," Marshall women's golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said.

All of Marshall's golfers either matched or improved on their scores from rounds 1 to 2 in the tournament.

Overall, Marshall's 12-stroke improvement between rounds was second-best among competing teams.

"We started the first round out with some nerves and it showed a bit," Burkhammer said. "We brought it back in the second round to play like we know how to. We're ready to go low tomorrow and finish strong."

Currently, Marshall sits in 12th out of 17 teams at the GCU Invitational.

Final round action from GCU Championship Golf Course starts at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
