Marshall Slugs Past Winthrop To Win Ninth Straight

Thundering Herd March Madness concludes Saturday.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The cold weather did not cool off the nine-game winning streak for the Marshall softball team Friday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd (19-3) defeated Winthrop (14-9) by an 8-1 final.
Pitcher Sydney Nester earned her nation's leading 12th win in the circle in 2023. Her nine strikeouts in the win brought her total up to 114, a number tied with Alabama's Montana Fouts for most in the country.
Autumn Owen went 2-3 at the plate Friday, while slugging her 12th home run of the season, a number that is second in the country.
Owen's 4th inning home run scored redshirt-freshman Brooklyn Ulrich, who notched her third career multi-hit performance in the win.
Grace Chelemen's fourth home run of the season gave MU the 4-0 cushion in the 3rd. Chelemen was at the plate when the Herd tallied its first run in the 1st. Leadoff hitter Alex Coleman came around to score on the play after leading off the inning with one of her three hits.
In total, Marshall pounded out 10 hits, their 11th time surpassing 10 or more in a game this season.
UP NEXT
Four games remain on Saturday in the Thundering Herd March Madness round robin, with Marshall playing the middle two contests. MU faces Cleveland State at 11:00 a.m. before meeting Rider at 1:00 p.m. from Dot Hicks Field.
