Marshall sophomore nets consecutive rounds of 72, sits three back
WALLACE, N.C. – Marshall sophomore Emily McLatchey is tied for second after the first two rounds of the River Landing Classic, hosted by UNC Wilmington at River Landing Golf Course in Wallace, North Carolina.
McLatchey showed consistency throughout the day, netting a pair of Even par rounds of 72 to remain tied for second, just three shots back of the lead.
"Emily continues to be such a solid player for us," Marshall women's golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "I'm really proud of her and excited to see this team compete again tomorrow."
McLatchey and leader Yanjun Liu of Princeton were the only two golfers on the day to feature two rounds of par or better. In the second round, Liu notched a Hole-in-One on No. 6 from 141 yards out that helped produce her three-shot lead.
McLatchey, a sophomore from Winter Park, Florida, netted birdies on Nos. 2 and 10 in each round played during Monday's first day of competition which put her in contention at three shots behind Liu and tied with James Madison's duo of Kendall Turner and Kayleigh Reinke.
As a team, Marshall is currently in 9th place and improved its scoring from rounds 1 to 2.
Conditions down at River Landing were tough on Monday with the highs staying around 45 degrees on an overcast day in North Carolina.
Burkhammer said her team stayed tough despite the conditions.
"I saw some good things out of the team today during the 36-hole day," Burkhammer said. "We fought back and did what we could to limit mistakes."
The team returns to River Landing for the final round of the classic at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
