Herd Softball Travels to Boone For Program’s First Sun Belt Series

Marshall and App State to open the weekend series at 5:00 p.m. Friday.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The 21-3 Marshall softball team, off to its best start in program history, opens its first Sun Belt Conference series against the App State Mountaineers (15-6) Friday.

- A historic month to open the season has put Marshall on several conference and national leaderboards.
- Redshirt-senior Sydney Nester leads the SBC in shutouts (4) and strikeouts (122). Her strikeout count is fourth nationally.
- Junior Autumn Owen is seventh in the country with a .507 batting average. Her 34 hits are second-most in the league behind only teammate, sophomore Alex Coleman, with 36. Both hit totals rank top-25 nationally.
ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS
- Managing App State is veteran coach Shelly Hoerner.The Mountaineers are 132-120 in her six seasons leading the program.
- The Mountaineers were picked eighth in the SBC preseason poll (Marshall picked sixth).
- Leading App offensively is junior outfielder Kayt Houston. Houston sports a .406 average with one home run.
- Kaylie Northrup leads the Mountaineer staff with a 1.97 ERA in nine appearances this season. The junior posts a 0.94 WHIP.
