Marshall sophomore finished 2nd in River Landing Classic
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall sophomore Emily McLatchey was named Sun Belt Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, the conference announced on Friday afternoon.
McLatchey earned a second-place finish in the River Landing Classic this week in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Herd's sophomore leader finished at 1-over for the tournament after stellar rounds of 72-72-73, which left McLatchey one shot out of the lead at event's end.
"I am so proud of Emily for earning Sun Belt Golfer of the Week," Marshall golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "She continues to put in the work to be successful and I'm glad to see that hard work being rewarded. I'm looking forward to her carrying momentum from this into Pawley's Island in a few weeks."
McLatchey's consistency was impressive on the week as she led the River Landing Classic in pars made (41 in 54 holes) and par-3 average (2.83). The Winter Park, Florida native also had at least two birdies in each round, which led her to the strong finish.
In the final round, McLatchey's final two birdies came when she needed them the most.
McLatchey notched 11 straight pars but was still slightly outside of contention before finding birdies on consecutive holes to put her within a shot with one hole left.
It marks the second straight tournament in which McLatchey has led the Herd in scoring average. Through six rounds in the spring, McLatchey has a 72.17 stroke average.
McLatchey and the Thundering Herd next return to action on March 27 at the Golfweek AGT Collegiate in Pawley's Island, South Carolina.
