McGrane, Hurrion earn singles wins, team for win at No. 2 doubles
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall's Aisling McGrane and Sophia Hurrion notched singles victories, but it was not enough as the Thundering Herd fell to No. 20 Old Dominion at 7827 Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
McGrane's match with ODU's Alesya Yakubovich went to a decisive tiebreaker and McGrane won a pair of tough points to earn a 10-8 win after the two players had split the first two sets.
Hurrion finished the match with momentum for the Thundering Herd, taking down ODU's Allison Isaacs to end the day.
"Obviously, Sophia and Aisling did a great job closing out their matches at the end," Marshall tennis coach John Mercer said. "They are a really good team. That's why they are top-20. We had chances at times, but we let them slip away so we will have to understand the momentum a little bit more."
With the loss, Marshall falls to 8-5 overall on the season and 2-1 in Sun Belt Conference action. Old Dominion improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in SBC play.
The doubles point was hotly contested with McGrane and Hurrion combining to get a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. However, ODU notched 6-3 victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to earn the point.
That momentum carried into the singles matches where the Monarchs clinched the match with wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 1 singles in straight sets to clinch the victory.
The Thundering Herd will look to get back to its winning ways when the team travels to Atlanta, Georgia to take on Georgia State at 10 a.m. on March 25.
