Marshall Softball Falls Late to JMU, 7-6

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's softball team fought back from a four-run deficit to tie the game late, but James Madison was able to escape Dot Hicks Field with a 7-6 win on Saturday afternoon.

Following the loss, Marshall falls to 37-7 overall and 12-3 in Sun Belt Conference action.

Prior to the game, Marshall honored several former players who returned for Alumni Weekend and also honored senior Grace Chelemen, who was named as the 2023 Warrior Award recipient – an award that honors late Marshall player Emileigh Cooper.

Chelemen carried the emotion of that moment into her first at-bat, cranking a two-run home run to right field that gave the Thundering Herd a 2-1 lead after one inning.

James Madison went on to score the game's next five runs over a three-inning span, but Marshall fought back to tie the game.

Marshall scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of a bases-loaded walk to Rielly Lucas and a two-run single from Lauren Love that cut it to 6-5.

In the next inning, Marshall again loaded the bases and knotted the game at 6-all on an RBI fielder's choice by Autumn Owen that scored Bri Godfrey.

However, James Madison got a home run by Hannah Shiflett – her third of the game – to break the tie in the top of the seventh and put the Dukes ahead for good.

Marshall's Alex Coleman finished the game 3-for-4 in the loss.

Marshall and James Madison play the rubber match of their series at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
