Stellar Pitching, Clutch Hitting Sends Herd to SBC Semis

Marshall faces South Alabama at 5 p.m. eastern Friday.

Championship Central

LAFAYETTE, La. — The tension was relieved from the thick Louisiana air when Camryn Michallas caught the final out on a high pop up in front of home plate to secure No. 2 Marshall's 2-1 win over the No. 7 seed Coastal Carolina.

It was Michallas, the Huntington native's two-out RBI single in Marshall's 6th inning rally that proved to be the winning run for Coach Megan Smith Lyon's side.

"Alex (Coleman) started us off and got the rally going and it really is contagious for us. Once the hits get going, everyone jumps on board," Smith Lyon said. "Our mindset was to be locked in and pass the bat and in the 6th inning, we had some clutch hits from Grace (Chelemen) and Cam."

Following Coleman's leadoff single in the 6th, her 42nd stolen base of the season with two outs set up Chelemen with a runner in scoring position. From there, the senior laced a 2-1 pitch over the center fielder's head to break the scoreless tie. Michallas followed suit with the RBI rip up the middle to score Marshall's second run of the frame.

The lead provided insurance for Sydney Nester, who was dominant in a complete-game effort. Nester struck out nine and worked around a 7th inning, two-out error that led to Coastal's lone run.

"Sydney is amazing," Smith Lyon said. "She pitched such a tough game, Coastal has seen her multiple times, she pitched quite a bit against them in the regular season, so for her to be able to come out and handle their excellent offense is just amazing. She is a fighter, she has the right mindset, and she is determined, we saw that today."
