Herd Volleyball Opens Weekend with a Pair of Wins in Utah

CEDAR FALLS, Utah – The Marshall University volleyball team (7-6) took its opening two matches at the Southern Utah/Utah Tech Invitational 3-1 over Idaho (24-26, 25-15, 25-23, 25-9) and 3-1 at Southern Utah (26-24, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18) on Friday.
"I'm really proud of our unit gutting two four-set wins out today," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said. "We were able to move pieces around and adapt to two very different opponents. It's been a great start to this tournament, and we're ready to get geared up for a very tough Utah Tech team."
Marshall 3, Idaho 1
Brynn Brown registered her second triple-double of the season with 28 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills. Utah native Lydia Montague recorded a team-high 12 kills with Peyton Neal leading the way with 18 digs.
After falling in the first set 26-24, Marshall came back with dominance in the second. The Herd started the second frame on an 8-0 run and led it wire-to-wire, taking the set 25-15.
The Herd trailed by as many as seven points, 13-6, in the third. However, it rallied to get on top of the Vandals 16-15 with a Sarah Wadsworth kill. Idaho made a pair of errors late in the set to see MU take it by the narrow margin of 25-23.
It was all Marshall in the fourth set. The Herd utilized a 12-0 run in the middle of the stanza, cruising to a 25-9 set victory to seal the match.
Marshall 3, Southern Utah 1
Jazminn Parrish registered a double-double with a match-high 15 kills and 13 digs. Brown recorded 36 assists while Neal had 21 digs.
MU led the majority of the first set, but Southern Utah fought off four set points to tie the opening frame 24-24. However, Marshall settled down using a Wadsworth kill and a Thunderbird error to take it 26-24.
SUU tied the match, 1-1, by taking the second set 25-18.
The Herd came back strong in the third set as it never trailed in the frame. Marshall closed the set by taking 10 of the final 17 points for a 25-20 victory.
MU had to overcome a small early deficit en route to taking the set and match in the fourth frame. The Herd went on a 9-4 rally to take the final set 25-18 to seal the match for a 2-0 day to open the tournament.
