HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University volleyball team (8-7, 1-0 Sun Belt) fell 3-1 (25-15, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23) in its Sun Belt Conference opener to the Old Dominion Monarchs (9-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) on Thursday in the Cam Henderson Center.

"I think in set one, we weren't awake or ready. I don't know what we were thinking because we know how good ODU is," Herd volleyball head coach Ari Aganus said after the match. "We know how aggressive they are, and it was almost like we were surprised. That's on us for prep that we need to make better, but for us to go down like that and push back is what we're more focused on."

Brynn Brown registered a team-high 32 assists as Essence Clerkley recorded 12 kills with Lydia Montague finishing 11 attacks. Peyton Neal had a match-high of 32 digs in the contest.

After ODU took the first set, 25-15, wire-to-wire, the Herd battled in the next three. MU fell in a tightly contested second set, 25-22, that featured the score tied 18 times and six lead changes. Marshall had a .394 hitting percentage in the second frame.

The Herd sent the match to a fourth set with a 25-22 triumph in the third. The Green and used its momentum in the second set to not trail in third frame.

The Monarchs took the match taking a very close fourth set, 25-23.
