BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team (3-2) swept its tri-meet against the Buffalo Bulls, 212-157, and the Duquesne Dukes, 242-119, Saturday in Buffalo. The Herd also concluded action at the UB Diving Invite as Sunday's action was canceled due to inclement weather.
"Always great to walk away with two wins," Herd swimming and diving head coach Ian Walsh said. "We went up against two well coached teams and the women showed a lot of toughness today. I thought our two individual swims of the day were Mia's 200 Backstroke and Klava's 100 Freestyle. Both season-bests and executed their race plans really well. Our 400 Freestyle Relay was excellent, and probably our best swim of the weekend."
MU started out Saturday's action strong with Mia McBride, Audrey West, Madeline Hart, Klava Katayama taking the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:44.28. This was followed by Eszter Labana taking the 1000 Freestyle (10:31.84), Katayama winning the 100 Freestyle (52.13), McBride capturing first place in the 200 Backstroke (2:03.09) and team of Hart, Katayama, Parker Lynch and Molly Warner taking the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:29.82).
The Herd swept the podium in a pair of events with Banton (2:20.69), West (2:22.03) and Jenna Bopp (2:23.03) sweeping the 200 Breaststroke and West (2:07.53), Banton (2:09.38) and Allison Dodd (2:10.93) taking the top-three places in the 200 Individual Medley.
"We won seven of the eight swimming events today and our divers had a strong showing on our 1m boards this afternoon," Walsh commented. "Grace Kelsheimer led the charge on the diving side and our other individual wins were by pretty wide margins. Paige, Eszter and Audrey put together some quality races as well."
Kelsheimer led the way in the 1-Meter Dive finishing fifth with a score of 250.55. In the Team Dive, Marshall scored 217.60 points for third.
"There were a lot do takeaways from this weekend that we can apply to the next two weeks of training," Walsh said. "We look forward to celebrating our seniors in our final meet of the year in two weeks. The team is in a good spot, and we'll get back to work on Monday."
