2023 NCAA XC Qualifier broke Indoor 3K record Saturday
NEW ORLEANS – Marshall graduate senior Abby Herring has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday as announced by the league office.
Herring opened her final season of track and field at Marshall with a victory in the 3K, setting a personal, track, and school record. Her 9:28.68 broke a Jeff Small Track record, and smashed a previous school record set by Herring last season by nearly 19 seconds.
"I can't think of anyone more deserving of this recognition," Director of track and field Keith Roberts said. "Abby has been putting in work all season and we are fortunate to witness it every time she competes. Abby continues to set the tone for the team and it shows in practices and performances, including breaking the 3K school record by nearly 19 seconds this past weekend."
In her Herd career, the Parkersburg, West Virginia native has set or reset 24 school records. In November, Herring became the first female in school history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
"I'm stoked with how Abby raced this past weekend," Distance coach Caleb Bowen said. "It is tough to race any race solo but she was able to push herself hard in the second half of the race and break her own school record by 19 seconds. She is such a fun athlete to coach and I can't wait to see what she does this season."
