HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A strong opening half propelled Marshall's first-place women's basketball team (13-5, 7-0 SBC) to a 97-85 win over Coastal Carolina (7-13, 1-6 SBC) in front of 2,219 fans at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Herd's Abby Beeman scored her 2,000th point in the victory. She is the fourth player in team history to surpass the 2,000 mark while wearing a Marshall uniform.
Beeman scored 22 along with co-leading scorer Aislynn Hayes, who finished with 10 rebounds, her first double-double of the season.
Coach Kim Caldwell's team has won all seven of its SBC games by 12 or more points. Marshall is off to its best start in league play since 1988-89 after its fourth-straight victory over the Chanticleers.
"Coastal is a really tough team, we knew that they were going to be tough," Caldwell said. "Almost an identical game to last week, just more scoring here as it was at their place. They don't quit and we knew that coming in."
