HARRISONBURG, Va. – Marshall (14-5, 8-0 SBC) matched a season-high 14 triples as the Sun Belt Conference-leading Thundering Herd defeated defending champions, JMU (14-6, 6-2 SBC) on the road, 77-70.
The win for Coach Kim Caldwell's Herd ties a mark with Judy Southard's 1988-89 Herd for the best start to league play in program history.
"I was happy with the win, I don't think we played the greatest so to be able to go on the road against a team like JMU with the history that JMU has and not play well and come back with a win is a good step for our program," Caldwell said. "We've got a long trip home tonight and we've got another big one on Saturday."

Marshall, who trailed by as many as 14 early, dominated over the course of much of the second half, outscoring the Dukes by 20 over the first 15 minutes after halftime.
Aislynn Hayes took off in the 3rd, netting 10 of her game-leading 21 points in the quarter. Breanna Campbell and Abby Beeman also scored 19 and 10 points to aid in the total, while Sydni Scott added 12 points off four triples.
Three of Scott's 3-pointers came crucially in the first half to keep the Herd within striking distance. The sophomore guard connected on two shots from deep in the final 30 seconds of the opening half to get MU to within four at the break.
With the win, Marshall holds a 1.5 game lead on the next closest team in the conference following Wednesday's results.
